A cultural cornerstone of queer celebration is preparing for its final curtain call. Mariah Hanson, the pioneering force behind The Dinah, has announced that she will step away from producing the legendary event after the 2025 edition, marking the end of a 34-year legacy that has transformed the landscape for LGBTQ+ women, non-binary individuals, and their allies worldwide.
Slated for September 24–28, 2025, at the Riviera Resort in Palm Springs, the final Dinah promises to be an unforgettable celebration and a deeply personal farewell from Hanson, who turned a bold vision into one of the most impactful LGBTQ+ festivals on the planet.
From a College Party to a Global Movement
“I threw great parties in college, and that easily segued into throwing great parties for my community,” Hanson recalled in a recent interview.
That first step became Club Skirts Dinah Shore Weekend in 1991—a grassroots gathering named in honor of the famed entertainer and golfer, originally timed around the Dinah Shore Golf Tournament. It has evolved into a five-day event, famous for its exciting pool parties, star-studded performances, and openly queer atmosphere.
From its inception, Palm Springs provided not just a stunning backdrop but a unique spirit. “Palm Springs is the perfect place to hold The Dinah,” Hanson explained. “They understand the significance of having our unique and diverse women’s group here.”
Why These Spaces Still Matter
In today’s challenging political climate, lesbian and queer communities need spaces that celebrate who we are and remind us that we are not alone. As anti-LGBTQ+ laws spread across the U.S. and harmful messages increase, it’s easy to feel isolated. However, events like The Dinah do more than provide fun; they symbolize resistance, visibility, and support. They help counter fear and exclusion by creating joyful moments that affirm our right to be ourselves.

Breaking Barriers, Building Community
In its early years, The Dinah faced challenges. “The town was very conservative when I first came here,” Hanson said. “Helping the city see how amazing our community is—and how profitable the LGBTQIA market is—began the ascent to where we are today.”
The rise has been significant. The Dinah has become the world’s largest and longest-running music festival for queer women and non-binary individuals, attracting thousands each year to celebrate, connect, and let loose in a safe and affirming space.
A Launchpad for Music Legends
Hanson is both a musical visionary and a cultural influencer. Over the years, The Dinah has served as a launching pad for future superstars. Lady Gaga performed in a bubble suit before she became a global icon; Katy Perry leaped into the crowd with infectious joy; and Lizzo and Doechii graced the stage long before achieving mainstream fame.
This year’s farewell promises another stellar lineup. While the full entertainment schedule will drop in mid-June, attendees can already look forward to the return of Leisha Hailey and Kate Moennig of The L Word—a show that famously brought The Dinah to screens worldwide.
The pair will sign copies of their new book, So Gay for You, take photos with fans, and make special appearances, including walking the red carpet in what’s sure to be a symbolic moment of queer full-circle visibility.
A Love Letter to the Community
“This final Dinah is my personal love letter to the community,” Hanson said. “A celebration that reflects the boldness, beauty, and heart that have always defined who we are.”
The event will include a tribute to its musical legacy and a nod to the community that sustained it. “Whether you’re returning to relive the magic or experiencing it for the first time, this is your moment to be part of herstory,” Hanson said.

What Comes Next
Although Hanson is stepping away, she is not closing the chapter completely. She is actively discussing potential successors to ensure that The Dinah continues under new leadership. “It’s time for a new generation to bring their vision, energy, and passion to this legacy,” she said. “That’s my deepest hope.”
A Historic Send-Off
The 2025 Dinah will be more than a party—it will be a moment of reflection, resistance, and celebration. “Come raise a glass, dance under the sun, and help write this last extraordinary chapter with me,” Hanson said. “While I may be taking my final bow, the legacy we’ve built together will live on in every life it’s touched.”
