Witchy Ways: A Supernatural Love Story For Halloween

Every October brings the familiar Halloween rotation: slashers, haunted houses, nostalgic favorites and plenty of witches. But if your spooky-season watchlist could use a little more queer romance, Witchy Ways deserves a spot.

Writer-director Jane Clark’s supernatural love story blends witchcraft, humor, and sapphic romance into something much warmer than the typical Halloween film.

The film, which stars Diora Baird and Marem Hassler, centers on two women who are brought together by an enchanted cottage, their family history and the idea that accepting who you are might be a form of magic in itself.

What Is Witchy Ways About?

Eve (Diora Baird) is a successful brand manager who retreats to a quiet cottage that belonged to her late mother — a place her mother claimed was magical.

There, she meets Danni (Marem Hassler), a mysterious neighbor who proves she knows more than she lets on about the cottage, Eve’s family, and the supernatural world around them.

Their friendship, which they were reluctant about, soon develops into something more.

Danni tells Eve the truth and says that she is a witch and that witchcraft is a family trait. Eve isn’t exactly convinced.

As more strange things happen and a neighbor seeking revenge threatens Danni’s home, Eve must decide how far she is prepared to believe in magic, in Danni, and perhaps in herself.

A Queer Love Story With a Little Magic

What makes Witchy Ways a good choice for Halloween is the relationship between Eve and Danni, even though the magic is enjoyable. The romance is part of the broader supernatural narrative and isn’t something the characters have to overcome.

Queer audiences at times want stories which deal with coming out, discrimination and the realities of LGBTQ+ life – and sometimes we would just like the lesbian to fall for the witch.

Romance, attraction, danger, family history, and supernatural chaos can exist without queerness being the source of conflict.

That makes the movie an especially easy addition to a cozy Halloween movie night.

The Queer Cast Behind Witchy Ways

The film features a stellar queer and ally cast: Diora Baird (Wedding Crashers, Cobra Kai), Marem Hassler (Riley Parra), Candis Cayne (Dirty Sexy Money, The Magicians), Guinevere Turner (American Psycho, The L Word), and David Fumero(Power).

Cayne, who made history as the first transgender actress with a recurring role on primetime TV, lights up the screen with her signature grace and magic. For longtime LGBTQ+ film and television fans, Turner is an especially familiar face. Her career spans decades of queer cinema and includes appearances in The L Word, as well as work as a screenwriter and filmmaker.

Witchcraft, Sisterhood & Queer Representation

Inspired by the real-life friendship between Clark and Hassler, the film gives classic witch stories a queer twist. Rather than sticking to old fantasy tropes, Witchy Ways looks at personal identity, authenticity, and love, making it stand out from other movies in the genre.

In pop culture, witches are often women who don’t follow society’s rules. They live differently, know things others fear, and what they’re told to hide often turns out to be their strength. It isn’t difficult to understand why LGBTQ+ audiences might recognize something familiar in that story.

Witchy Ways looks at these themes of identity, family, belonging, and choosing to accept something that first seems outside what Eve thinks is “normal.”

Halloween has been linked to queer self-expression for a long time. Costumes, transformation, camp, and the chance to play with identity have made October 31 an unofficial LGBTQ+ celebration for generations. So, watching a story about a queer witch on Halloween just feels right.
